Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment (KICA)

The Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment (KICA) was developed and validated in response to the need for a validated cognitive screening tool for older Aboriginal Australians living in rural and remote areas. It has been further adapted for use with Torres Strait Islander people, and for Aboriginal people living in urban and regional areas.

The KICA allows health practitioners to detect dementia and other cognitive impairment among older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 45 years and above living in urban, rural and remote areas of Australia.

The full KICA package includes components on cognition (KICA-Cog Remote and KICA-Cog Urban and Regional), depression (KICA-Dep), and family corroboration sections (KICA-Carer, KICA-Behaviour and KICA-ADL). A shorter KICA-Screen (sKICA) has also been developed.

The KICA package comprises of:

  • An instruction booklet
  • Images that have been culturally adapted for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in urban, regional or remote areas
  • Dementia checklist
  • Tools for screening for depression
  • Tools for care planning
